Addressing Labour Shortages in New Brunswick’s Construction Sector

In a groundbreaking move towards fostering innovation and overcoming challenges in the construction sector, the Construction Association of New Brunswick (CANB) is proud to announce a significant investment from the federal government through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s (ACOA) Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program. This investment, totaling $190,612, was unveiled by Jenica Atwin, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, on January 29, 2024.

The Honourable Arlene Dunn, Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, also revealed a provincial contribution of $250,000 towards this initiative and other related projects. This collaborative effort demonstrates a shared commitment between the federal and provincial governments to address the pressing issue of labour shortages in New Brunswick’s construction sector.

Recognizing the critical role a robust workforce plays in building strong communities and fostering economic prosperity, the Construction Association of New Brunswick is establishing a Labour Force Adjustment Committee. This committee will serve as a platform for federal and provincial governments, as well as industry stakeholders, to collectively develop both short and long-term solutions to the labour shortages plaguing the construction sector.

The 100-day challenge initiated by the committee will focus on identifying and overcoming key roadblocks, including credential recognition, recruitment, and workplace readiness. By actively engaging with these challenges, the committee aims to lay the groundwork for a more sustainable and resilient construction industry in New Brunswick.

This initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Government of Canada to contribute to Atlantic Canada’s momentum by strengthening communities, creating new opportunities, and laying the foundation for a prosperous future. The collaborative spirit demonstrated by this partnership underscores the dedication to fostering positive change and driving innovation in the region.
