Canada Invests $7 Million in Skilled Trades Workforce

Windsor, Ontario – In a significant move to address the growing shortage of skilled trade workers in Canada, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, Randy Boissonnault, announced a groundbreaking investment of over $7.3 million in two projects aimed at diversifying and strengthening the talent pool in the Red Seal trades.

Canada is witnessing a critical need for skilled trade workers, driven by demographic shifts and high retirement rates. The Government of Canada recognizes this demand and is committed to investing in initiatives that ensure accessibility to training opportunities for all Canadians, irrespective of their background.

The Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy’s Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) – Innovation in Apprenticeship Stream will be the driving force behind two projects poised to make a significant impact.

Diversifying the Talent Pipelines for In-demand Red Seal Trades

Build a Dream to Empower Women is set to receive over $4 million over two years for their project aimed at empowering underrepresented apprentices. This initiative will benefit up to 18,000 individuals in Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia. Participants will receive support not only in upgrading their technical skills through hands-on experience but also in developing leadership and team-building competencies. The collaboration with unions and employers ensures that participants secure work placements in the Red Seal trades, fostering a more inclusive and skilled workforce.

SMART for Women: Supporting Success in Apprenticeships

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST) will receive more than $3 million over four years for their SMART for Women project. This initiative is designed to support up to 400 apprentices in progressing and succeeding in their apprenticeships. Through math refresher courses, assistance in enrolling for technical training, and providing wrap-around supports like childcare and financial assistance, WEST aims to empower apprentices to complete their training successfully and pursue in-demand jobs.

This substantial investment reflects the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to apprenticeship supports. Annually, nearly $1 billion is dedicated to grants, loans, tax credits, Employment Insurance benefits, project funding, and support for the Red Seal program.
